Newsletters – November 2022

The latest newsletter from Cumbernauld Old Parish Church is now available.

We welcome two Team Ministers, Fiona Crawford and James Gemmell, to Cumbernauld Old and they will be working with us alongside our partners at St Mungo’s and Kildrum Parish Churches for the next wee while. The newsletter also has an update on the status of the Glasgow Presbytery Mission Plan and how it will impact us here at Cumbernauld Old.

Elsewhere in the magazine we take a look back at Harvest and forward to Advent and Christmas, there are updates from our Craft Group and Property, Fundraising and Mission teams and there’s an introduction to the community singing group, called Arria Voices, which meets in the church every Wednesday evening. Rainbow Service – Sunday 27th November

Cumbernauld Old Parish Church will be holding our annual Rainbow Service on Sunday 27th November at 3pm.

This service aims to provide an opportunity for people who have been bereaved, recently or some time ago, to remember and reflect in a short time of worship together.
All welcome.

Please note: to respect the privacy of those attending, the Rainbow Service won’t be streamed or recorded online.

Gift Service – First Sunday in Advent

We invite you to join us for worship at Cumbernauld Old on Sunday 27th November, the First Sunday in Advent. The service will be at 11.00am in the Parish Church and will be led by Rev Fiona Crawford.

This will also be our annual Gift Service and, as in previous years, we invite those who are able to help at this time, to please bring donations of toys, toiletries, Christmas treats or gift cards to the service. All donations will be passed to our local food bank at Bethlehem House of Bread at Cornerstone House for distribution locally. The remarkable and generous response for these appeals shown by the congregation over the years has always been greatly appreciated and we are certain that this will once again be the case this year. Thank you.

Sunday’s service will also be live-streamed on our Facebook page for those who are unable to be with us in person.

We invite you to join us for worship at Cumbernauld Old on Sunday 20th November. The service will be at 11.00am in the Parish Church and will be led by Rev Fiona Crawford.

Christmas Gift Service – Sunday 27th November

Our 2022 Gift Service will take place on Sunday 27th November at 11.00am. As in previous years all donations will be passed on to Bethlehem House of Bread at Cornerstone Church to distribute locally. If you are able to help, please bring donations of toys, toiletries and Christmas treats or gift cards to the service. The remarkable response for these appeals shown by the congregation over the years has always been greatly appreciated but never more so than in these uncertain times. Thank you.

Welcome Space Initiative

In partnership with Cornerstone and the Village Community Council, Cumbernauld Old has been invited by North Lanarkshire Council to participate in setting up a ‘welcome space’ for local residents from November 2022 to March 2023.
The Council will provide all the funding necessary and propose to open the small hall in The Wynd every Thursday morning. Details have still to be finalised, but for it to go ahead it needs the help of the wider community; it needs men and women to volunteer to staff the sessions. Read more here…

Worship on Sunday 13th November

Sunday 13th November is Remembrance Sunday and there will be an Act of Remembrance at Cumbernauld Village War Memorial at 10.45am led by Rev Fiona Crawford.
Our worship service in the Parish Church will follow at approximately 11.15am and will be led by Rev Fiona Crawford. All welcome!
The service in the Parish Church will also be live-streamed on our Facebook page for those who are unable to be with us in person.

Fiona Crawford writes: “James and I would like to thank everyone for the cards, gifts, baking and for your support by coming along to our ordination or watching online. We were quite overwhelmed by the attendance and the good wishes of everyone and the wonderful singing at the service. The stole you gave me is beautiful and the water symbolised is very similar to that shown on your pulpit fall – the converging waters of the area that gave Comar nan Allt its name and this will be a treasured reminder of my ordination here in Cumbernauld.”

Worship on Sunday 6th November

We invite you to join us for worship on Sunday 6th November at 11.00am in Cumbernauld Old Parish Church.
Our service this week will be led by Ivar Struthers with the Reverend Hilary McDougall, Moderator of the Presbytery of Glasgow, presiding as we celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism and the Admission of a New Communicant member of the Church. All welcome!
The service will also be live-streamed on our Facebook page at 11am on Sunday if you can’t be with us in person.

Ordination Congratulations

Warm congratulations to the now Reverend Fiona Crawford and Reverend James Gemmell on their ordinations as Ministers of Word and Sacrament on Thursday 3rd November. Fiona and James will be exercising a Team Ministry with the congregations of Cumbernauld Old and Kildrum linked with St Mungo’s and, in case you are wondering what Team Ministry involves, we’ve posted a wee Q&A here to give some insight into their roles.
We wish them God’s blessing as they seek to lead us into the next chapter of our church’s life.

Musical Theatre event

A reminder about our musical evening being held on Thursday 10th November. The entertainment will start at 7.30pm in Cumbernauld Old Parish Church and be provided by the Cumbernauld Musical Theatre Society who will be singing a variety of well-known songs from musical theatre.
Entry to the event will be by voluntary donation to Church funds at the door on the night. We hope to see you there as it promises to be an enjoyable evening for all.

Warm Space initiative

In partnership with Cornerstone and the Village Community Council, Cumbernauld Old has been invited by North Lanarkshire Council to participate in setting up a ‘welcome space’ for local residents from November 2022 to March 2023.

The Council will provide all the funding necessary and propose to open the small hall in The Wynd every Thursday from 12.30 -14.30 to serve soup and sandwiches provided by Cornerstone and, if possible, re-open from 16.00 – 18.00 to offer an early evening snack. It will be a place where people can enjoy some company and come together to “seat, eat and heat”.

Details have still to be finalised, but for it to go ahead it needs the help of the wider community; it needs men and women to volunteer to staff the sessions. Hopefully, enough people will come forward to make up a rota so that the commitment does not become too much of a burden.
