The schools are back in session, the days are getting shorter and festive goods are starting to appear in our shops. Yes, although it’s hard to believe, it’s that time of year again – the Webb Ivory catalogues have arrived! They are bigger and better with a wider range of cards, paper, gifts and lots more.
Cumbernauld Old Parish Church will get at least 25% from each item bought, so just one pack of cards or a roll of wrapping paper will contribute to church funds and so make a difference.
This is an easy, painless method of fund-raising for the church, so please give us your support. Even better, pass the catalogue round your friends, neighbours or workmates too. Get your catalogue – there are plenty to go round – from Wilma Shepherd or Elizabeth Snedden.
This year’s annual Summer Fete will be held on Saturday 30th May from 1.30pm – 4.00pm in the Manse grounds and we are looking for a turn-out to match last year’s wonderful attendance. Entry will be £1 per adult, with free entry for accompanied children. There will be an additional charge for the tea-room.
We hope to have all the usual stalls and plenty of activities for the children – at the moment we are looking for donations for raffle prizes and the tombola and soft goods (e.g. knitting, etc.) stalls. But most of all we’d like to ask you to put the date in your diary and make a note to come along.
We would also like help during the preceding week to help us get ready – if you can volunteer to help us clean / wipe down tables and chairs on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th from 6.30pm, and with erecting some stalls and gazebos on Friday 29th, that help would be greatly appreciated. Just turn up at the Manse and join in the fun!
With your help this year’s Summer Fete could be the best yet. Don’t miss it!
Everyone is invited to a concert of popular songs and ballads by Brats & Callets at Craighalbert Church on Sunday 22nd February at 3.00pm in aid of All You Need is Love (UK). Entry is by donation of £5 at the door (free to under-16s) and there will be tea and cake at the interval.
The Men’s Group Annual Burns’ Supper will be held on Wednesday 21 January in Cumbernauld Bowling Club and everyone is invited to come along to this extremely popular social event in the Church calendar.
Cumbernauld Burns Club will provide their usual, entertaining dialogue, masterminded by Callum Cormack, our Chairman for the evening. Our own Janet Graham and David Boyle will provide excellent musical interludes and Anne Walker will provide her usual wit in defence of the ladies. You will also be served a first class meal! All in all, a great night, not to be missed.
Tickets are now available from any member of the Men’s Group, modestly priced at £7 per head. The time on the evening is 7.00pm for 7.30pm. Hope to see you there.
Our annual Christmas Fair is on Saturday 29th November in the Village Hall, The Wynd. Doors are open from 10am until 12.30pm and we hope to offer a wide range of stalls, crafts and the usual tearoom. We’re sure Santa will manage to come along and there will also be lots of activities to keep the children occupied in the kidzone.
We are currently looking for donations of baking, raffle and tombola prizes, knitting, soft goods, toys and games in good condition, and Deans’ shortbread for the tearoom. We’ll also be raffling our popular Festive Hampers and a chart is available at church and at the Forge for items that can be handed in. Unfortunately, due to a lack of storage, we are unable to accept any more bric-a-brac or books.
We hope to see you all on Saturday 29th!
The Ladies’ Group from the Village would like to say a big “Thank You” to everyone who supported their Coffee & Cake evening on Friday 7th November in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support – whether you helped by baking, donating, setting up, washing dishes and tidying up afterwards, or simply by being there. The sum raised was a wonderful £350 – so thank you all for your generosity! STOP PRESS: that sum has now risen to £417, so thanks again everyone.
If you couldn’t be there but still want to donate, please speak to Christine Johnston or Margaret Cowan at church.
Well done, ladies. An excellent sum raised in aid of an excellent cause.
Anne Morrison and Elizabeth Snedden are looking for helpers to make simple craft items for sale at the Christmas Fayre. Please don’t be shy or think you have to be particularly creative – just bring along your enthusiasm, interest and ideas. We already have lots of lovely ingredients which will be turned into items for sale on Saturday 29th November.
If you are willing to help, please come along to the Church Session House on Monday 17th November at 1.00pm. Tea and cream cakes a promise!
The World Record for the longest ever non-stop game of 5-a-side football was claimed last weekend.
Representatives from a number of Boys’ Brigade companies, including our own 1st Cumbernauld Company, played continuously from 10pm on Thursday 11th to 9am on Sunday 14th September at Broadwood Stadium – with permitted breaks, a total of 55 hours, beating the previous record by two hours. All the documentation now has to be ratified by Guinness World Records, but we hope our record will soon be an ‘official’ one.
Under the title ‘Engage a Generation – the Seven Summit Challenge’ (shorted to Engage 7 Summits) this was an astonishing feat of both organisation and stamina and involved not just the 16 players but many support staff. Congratulations are due to everyone involved; it was truly an amazing effort.
Find out more on the Engage 7 Summits Facebook page – and, yes, donations would be most welcome!
